Government Tasked To Allocate Enough Resources For Disaster Preparedness

The government has been asked to allocate adequate resources towards emergency response efforts in the country.

This is after some schools in different parts of the country have remained closed due to floods even after schools were officially reopened for the second term on Monday this week.

Speaking to KFM, Citizens Concern Africa Founder & Executive Director Andrew Mafundo says children are heavily impacted by disasters such as floods since they are vulnerable and dependant on others for survival, emotional support and lifesaving skills.

Mafundo adds that the government needs to allocate resources for the establishment of such things as temporary shelters, and emergency supplies for the affected households to ensure the children’s education is not disrupted.

“Every time we get an emergency in the country you see panic, corruption and unplanned expenditure what happens? These ones are predictable we know them they come back and forth, what happened to the resource allocation, we have a minister for disaster preparedness what are they doing?,”  Ms. Mafundo responded.

Citizens’ Concern Africa (CICOA) is a non-governmental organisation that champions climate justice, human rights, natural resources governance, renewable energy and conservation.

According to the Uganda Red Cross Society, up to 39,185 people (8,011) households have so far been affected by flood hazards in 14 districts in Uganda while 3,080 households were displaced.
