Doreen Atwongyirwe, a 39-year-old lecturer at Bishop Stuart University Authorities in Mabarara, has been remanded to prison for causing grievous harm to her maid.
It is alleged that Atwongyirwe poured boiling water on her 16-year-old housemaid.
The incident took place on September 25, 2024, when Atwongyirwe returned to her home in Katete Central Cell, Mbarara City South Division to find her child in distress.
In an attempt to explain the situation, Ninsiima was reportedly scalded with boiling water.
After seeking medical care at a local clinic, she was hospitalized overnight.
The next day, she reported the incident to the Katete police, which resulted in Atwongyirwe’s arrest.
Atwonyirwe was remanded to prison by the Mbarara Grade One magistrate until October 15, 2024.
Prosecution alleges that the suspect with intent to disfigure or disable, poured hot water on her maid, who is also considered a minor.
The Police spokesperson, Rusoke Kituuma emphasized, “We strongly condemn the violence and mistreatment of domestic workers. Every individual has the right to dignity, respect, and safety.”
