40 Ugandan Students Join Equity Bank’s Pioneering Innovation Hub

Equity Bank has launched a groundbreaking initiative to cultivate a new generation of tech innovators in Uganda. Forty exceptional university students have been selected to participate in a six-month incubation program at the Equity Bank Innovation Hub.

The program aims to equip these young minds with the skills and knowledge necessary to develop innovative solutions to complex challenges facing the banking industry and society at large.

This initiative aligns with Equity Group’s broader Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan (ARRP), which seeks to digitize value chains for 100 million customers. Recognizing the critical role of technology in achieving this ambitious goal, the bank is investing in human capital development to build a robust pipeline of tech talent.

The selected students, drawn from the Equity Leaders Program (ELP), will undergo intensive training in app development, problem-solving, and innovation under the guidance of E&M Technology, a software development company founded by ELP alumni. The program will foster a collaborative learning environment where students can exchange ideas, work on group projects, and develop their entrepreneurial spirit.

Upon completion of the local incubation program, the 40 Ugandan scholars will join 400 other Equity Leaders Program participants from across the region in Kenya for further training and mentorship. This expanded network will provide invaluable opportunities for knowledge sharing and collaboration.

Equity Bank’s Managing Director, Anthony Kituuka, emphasized the bank’s commitment to empowering young people and driving technological advancement. “By investing in these talented individuals, we are not only building a strong foundation for our future but also contributing to the development of Uganda’s tech ecosystem,” he said.

The Equity Leaders Program, established in 1998, has a proven track record of identifying and nurturing exceptional talent. Over 24,000 scholars have benefited from the program, with many going on to achieve remarkable success in various fields. The program’s focus on leadership development and academic excellence has produced a strong network of alumni who are making a significant impact on their communities.

By launching the Innovation Hub and investing in the development of young tech talent, Equity Bank is demonstrating its commitment to driving Africa’s digital transformation. The program has the potential to create a new generation of innovative leaders who will shape the continent’s future.
