LOP Joel Ssenyonyi Urges Buvuma Fishermen To Unity

Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament (LOP), has visited Buvuma district and addressed concerns affecting the local fishing community and called upon the fishermen to harmonize amongst themselves, particularly those involved in the lucrative Nile Perch (Empuuta) and silverfish (Mukene) industries.

In his address on Monday, September 30, 2024, Ssenyonyi emphasized the need for unity among fishermen targeting both Mukene and Nile Perch and urged them to harmonize their positions regarding the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act 2022, which has yet to be presented for discussion.

“Harmonize your positions amongst yourselves in regards to the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act 2022, which is yet to be presented for discussion,” Ssenyonyi said.

Fishermen expressed frustration over conflicting laws and regulations imposed by the Fisheries Ministry and the Fish Protection Unit.

The fisherman also raised concerns about the involvement of UPDF soldiers in fishing activities, which they said has reportedly displaced many local fishermen and affected their livelihoods.

The consultative meeting saw the participation of several Members of Parliament (MPs) representing fishing communities, including Steven Serubula from Lugazi municipality, Robert Migadde of Buvuma, Buvuma Woman MP Suzan Mugabi, Buikwe South MP Lulume Bayiga, and Moses Kabuusu from Kyamuswa.

Ssenyonyi, alongside fellow MPs, committed to advocating for the introduction of necessary legislation by the State Fisheries Minister, Helen Adoa, aiming to provide a clear framework for the sector’s operations.

The meeting concluded with a shared resolve among the participants to work together to ensure that the voices of the fishing community are heard and considered in future regulatory decisions.
