In a surprising political move, popular Ugandan musician Sadat Mukibi, widely known by his stage name Kalifah AgaNaga, has officially joined the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) as he prepares to contest for the Kawempe North parliamentary seat in the upcoming elections. The artist, known for his hit songs and energetic performances, arrived at the FDC headquarters in Namasuba on 5th Febuary 2025 to pick up his party membership card, signaling his formal entry into the political arena.
Dressed in a crisp red coat and a black tie colors Kalifah AgaNaga was greeted by party officials and supporters who cheered him on as he completed the membership process. The musician-turned-politician expressed his enthusiasm for joining the opposition party, stating that his decision was driven by a desire to bring change and development to the people of Kawempe North.
“I am here to serve the people of Kawempe North. For too long, our community has faced challenges like poor infrastructure, unemployment, and limited access to basic services. I believe that with the support of the FDC and the people, we can turn things around,” Kalifah AgaNaga said during a brief address to the media.
The artist’s entry into politics has sparked mixed reactions among Ugandans. While some see it as a fresh and exciting development, others have questioned his readiness for the demanding role of a legislator. However, Kalifah AgaNaga remains undeterred, emphasizing that his experience as a grassroots artist has given him a deep understanding of the struggles faced by ordinary Ugandans.
“I may be new to politics, but I am not new to the people. I have walked the streets of Kawempe, performed in their neighborhoods, and listened to their stories. I know what they need, and I am ready to fight for them in Parliament,” he added.
FDC officials welcomed Kalifah AgaNaga into the party, describing him as a vibrant addition to their ranks. “We are excited to have Kalifah AgaNaga join us. His popularity and connection with the youth will be a great asset as we work towards building a better Uganda,” said One FDC official , a senior party member.
As the race for the Kawempe North parliamentary seat heats up, Kalifah AgaNaga will face stiff competition from other candidates, including the incumbent MP. However, his celebrity status and grassroots appeal could give him an edge in mobilizing support, particularly among the youth, who make up a significant portion of the electorate.
Whether Kalifah AgaNaga’s transition from music to politics will be a success remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: his entry into the race has added an exciting twist to the political landscape of Kawempe North and beyond. As the campaign season unfolds, all eyes will be on the artist-turned-politician to see if he can translate his star power into tangible results for his constituents.
