US Government Sanctions Speaker Anita Among

The United State government has announced sanctions against the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among.

In the latest sanctions by the US government, Among is accused of her  involvement in significant corruption or gross violations of human rights.

“Speaker of Parliament Anita Among is designated due to involvement in significant corruption tied to her leadership of Uganda’s Parliament.”

State Minister for Finance, Amos Lugoloobi, Agnes Nandutu and Mary Goretti Kitutu have also been indicted for their roles in the swindling of iron sheets meant for the vulnerable in Karamoja.

“They are being designated due to their involvement in significant corruption related to conduct that misused public resources and diverted materials from Uganda’s neediest communities,” the US government said in  a Thursday statement.

“All the four officials abused their public positions for their personal benefit  at the expense of Ugandans. Today’s actions reaffirm the US commitment to support transparency in Uganda’s democratic processes, counter corruption globally, and address the broader culture of impunity that prevents all Ugandans from enjoying their human rights and fundamental freedoms.”

The US government has also sanctioned former deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Peter Elwelu over human rights violations, especially in Kasese where over 100 people were killed in November 2016 when the UPDF raided the palace of Omusinga.

The sanctions follow earlier ones by the UK government.
