Hearing of the bail application for the three women arrested for protesting naked in Kampala has been scheduleed for September 12th, 2024.
Three women were remanded to Luzira prison after staging a half-naked protest, demanding the resignation of the Speaker of Parliament over allegations of corruption.
The protesters, identified as Praise Aloikin, Norah Kobusingye, and Kemitoma Kyenzibo, made a bold statement by painting their bodies in the national colors of red, black, and yellow.
The trio also displayed inscriptions on their bodies and carried placards, which called for immediate action against corruption within the highest echelons of government.
Their demonstration, which took place on Parliamentary Avenue, has sparked widespread discussion and debate.
According to the prosecution, the women’s actions amounted to a “common nuisance,” causing annoyance and inconvenience to the public.
The case was presented before Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi, where the accused pleaded not guilty.
The protest is part of a broader movement against corruption in Uganda, following the infamous March 23rd, 2024 protests in Kampala, where over 100 people were charged for their involvement in anti-corruption demonstrations.
Prosecutor Ivan Kyazze informed the court that investigations into the case are complete, and a trial date should be set.
