Following the arrest of former Deputy Resident City Commissioner Anderson Burora yesterday, police say he faces charges of hate speech and spreading malicious information under the Computer Misuse Act 2022, as amended.
Burora’s arrest comes weeks after he came out to condemn the leadership of Parliament for allegedly failing to fight corruption.
“He is at Kira division for safe custody,” said Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire.
Asked to provide details of the charges preferred against Burora, Owoyesigyire responded: “For the charges, I refer you to CID headquarters.”
CID has yet to respond to our queries on the matter.
On Monday evening, Burora reported via social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that his house was surrounded by unknown individuals demanding he accompany them.
Shortly thereafter, it was confirmed that Burora had been arrested and detained at Ntinda Police Station. As of now, the specific charges against him remain undisclosed.
According to his lawyer John Teira, he has been arrested in cases related to cyber harassment of the person of the Speaker of Parliament. Burora is known for criticizing government officials and the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, and he has been organizing a function to march to parliament on July 27, 2024, to criticize corrupt officials at the August House.
HOW IT STARTED
Burora was in mid-March suspended from office for alleged continued violation of the Uganda Public Service standing orders 2021. He had openly confronted the Speaker of Parliament, Annet Anita Among following reports about suspected cases of abuse of public resources at Parliament.
He recently formed a National Resistance Movement (NRM) group to fight corruption.
Burora lost his job as RCC after he was accused of using his social media accounts to criticize Anita Among the speaker of Parliament over alleged mismanagement of the 11th parliament.
He has resisted attempts by the RDC secretariat to silence his views against corruption at Parliament and other public bodies.
