Local rapper Gereson Wabuyi, better known as Gravity Omutujju, has said that Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine and the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), should have taken action to prevent his fans from targeting his late mother.
Mr Omutujju’s mother passed away last month due to high blood pressure and diabetes.
Many celebrities, including Mr Kyagulanyi, expressed their condolences on social media following her death.
In an interview with Sanyuka Television, Omutujju thanked the music community for their support during this difficult time.
However, he implied that Mr Kyagulanyi’s expressions of sympathy were insufficient, suggesting that the NUP leader did not manage to rein in his fans, who he claims insulted his mother while she was still alive.
“It’s important to offer condolences when someone suffers a loss, but it’s also crucial to be sensitive when someone is going through a hard time, particularly concerning their parents,” he said.
Mr Omutujju has had a strained relationship with Mr Kyagulanyi’s fans since February, when he challenged the NUP leader to build a hospital at his One Love Beach in Busabala.
This challenge angered Mr Kyagulanyi’s supporters, leading some to direct insults at Mr Omutujju’s mother.
Mr Omutujju told Sanyuka that Mr Kyagulanyi’s fans should have limited their attacks to music and refrained from targeting his mother.
He said Mr Kyagulanyi should have stepped in to curb the behavior of his ‘abusive’ fans.
“It’s fine for fans to critique my music, but if someone’s parent is suffering, it’s your duty to encourage your followers to lessen their attacks, especially if you have the power to influence them,” Omutujju stated.
He added, “Don’t wait until someone has passed away to express your condolences. You could have addressed the issues that caused her distress and made it clear that she was not involved, directing the criticism towards me instead of his mother.”
