“Am Still Signed Under Swangz Avenue” Winnie Nwagi

Singer Winnie Nwagi has said that she is still working with Swangz Avenue despite reports that indicated that she is on the verge of partying ways with the industrial area-based record label

In 2020, Nwagi signed another 5-year contract with the label which expired recently and reports within the company indicate that she is reluctant to sign another contract, a situation that has put her in a fix as she has not yet decided on whether to sign a contract renewal or not

While performing at Shades of Kampala band nights recently at the Villa, Bukoto, revellers asked the singer if the rumours were true and said that the rumours were not true because she is still working with them until everything is sorted out

“I’m still under Swangz Avenue because even the MC of the event Mr. Henrie addressed me as a Swangz Avenue artiste,” she said

She also dismissed reports of her instructing all her booking agents to cease working with Swangz Avenue.

If she succeeds in signing another 5-year contract with the label, she will be the longest-serving female artiste who has worked with them.

The artiste Joined the label in 2014 after being spotted at the Coca-Cola rated next singing competitions where she was a participant

Commonwealth Demands Uganda Free Besigye

The Commonwealth called on Tuesday for Uganda, a member of the 56-nation group, to release opposition politician Kizza Besigye, saying his detention undermined democracy and human rights.

A long-time critic of President Yoweri Museveni, Besigye’s prosecution by a military court and near three-month incarceration for offences including illegal firearms possession has stoked public anger against the government.

Besigye, 68, went on hunger strike last week, and he was briefly hospitalised over the weekend, an allied lawmaker said.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland said the detention of Besigye, his lawyer and an aide undermined “principles of democracy, human rights and the rule of law”, in rare criticism of a member by the group, which evolved out of the British Empire.

“The Commonwealth has always had a relationship based on trust with Uganda and looks forward to the return of a more inclusive and democratic political environment aligned with the Commonwealth Charter,” Scotland added in a statement.

Uganda’s information minister, Chris Baryomunsi, could not immediately be reached to comment.

The government has previously denied charges of human rights abuses, saying arrests and prosecutions are done in accordance with the law.

Critics of Museveni, who took power in 1986, say Besigye’s detention is the latest example of hardening authoritarianism ahead of an election next year in which the president is expected to stand again.

On Monday, police detained at least five activists, including leaders from Besigye’s political party, who were protesting in the capital Kampala to demand his release, a police spokesperson told local television.

Also on Monday, the runner-up in the last presidential election, Bobi Wine, said his brother – an official in his party – had been abducted in Kampala by armed men.

Police could not immediately be reached to comment.

President Museveni Speaks Out On Besigye’s Hunger Strike

President Museveni on Tuesday broke his silence on the continued detention and trial of veteran politician Kizza Besigye, several days after the Supreme Court blocked the prosecution of civilians in military courts.

Museveni stated that no one in the world can lecture his government on reconciliation and forgiveness, responding to online calls for the same. He further attributed Besigye’s weakened condition to his hunger strike, noting that his doctors were allowed to treat and transfer him to clinics outside Luzira Prison.

“Dr. Besigye, was on hunger strike. That is part of the cause for his weakness that we could see in the pictures that were in the Newspapers,” Museveni wrote on Tuesday.

In a lengthy post on his official X account, Museveni said efforts were underway on two fronts: transferring the case files from the military courts to civilian courts and working with legislators to close legal loopholes in the military court system.

“The concerned People are, therefore, working on two fronts. Transfer the files to the Civilian Courts from the Military Courts and the Gov’t and the legislators to close the gaps in the Military Courts,” Museveni’s post reads further.

Dr. Besigye and his colleague, Hajji Obeid Lutale, are facing three counts of unlawful possession of firearms, specifically two pistols and eight rounds of ammunition, allegedly found in their possession during their arrest at Riverside Apartments in Kenya on November 16, 2024.

The army prosecution maintains that firearms and ammunition are the exclusive preserve of the armed forces.

The duo has been on remand since November 20, 2024.

Airtel Uganda, a leading telecommunications network in Uganda has partnered with Trace Africa in a strategic move to celebrate African Music excellence and digital empowerment ahead of the prestigious Africa Trace Awards in Zanzibar from February 24th-26th, 2025.

The awards will also culminate the Airtel #SmartaWithData campaign, an initiative to enable customers to make informed decisions about their data usage habits. Airtel Africa earlier this year collaborated with three internationally renowned African artists, Fally Ipupa (Democratic Republic of Congo), Diamond Platnumz (Tanzania), and Simi (Nigeria) to engage customers on how to enhance their digital experience by making the most of their data bundles.

The artists created a special song to provide customers with practical tips and tools that will help them to maximize their data for everyday use, from browsing the internet to streaming and accessing essential apps.

Dennis Kahindi, Director of Home Broadband, Airtel Uganda emphasized how the #SmartaWithData campaign aligns with Airtel’s mission to bridge the digital divide by providing affordable and reliable data solutions, enabling young creatives, entrepreneurs, and digital consumers to maximize their online experiences.

He said, “In Uganda, this collaboration is particularly important. We know that data access is not just about staying connected but also about unlocking opportunities. Whether you are an artist sharing your music with the world, a young entrepreneur running an online business, or a student expanding your knowledge, Airtel is here to ensure that you get the most out of your data experience.”

The Trace Awards will serve as a vibrant platform to celebrate African music, creativity, and culture, bringing together top artists and industry players from across the continent. Airtel Uganda’s participation in this initiative highlights its dedication to both entertainment and digital empowerment, ensuring that Ugandan talent and audiences remain at the heart of Africa’s digital evolution.

“Am Beautiful And No Ugandan Female Artiste Comes Close To Me” Says Nina Roz

There may be debates about who the most talented female musician in the country is, but when it comes to certain aspects, Nina Kankunda, better known as Nina Roz, is confident she has no competition.

The songstress sees herself as the gold standard in terms of height and being naturally light-skinned, without any enhancements.

In her view, no other Ugandan female artiste comes close in those areas.

Recently, rumours surfaced claiming that Nina Roz had scheduled a concert for February 21st, the same day as Alien Skin’s and Biswanka’s events, only to cancel it.

However, she was just as surprised as everyone else when she heard these claims.

In a media interview, Nina Roz quickly dismissed the rumours as false, clarifying that she has never organized a concert of her own.

With years of experience in the industry, the Billboard Kipande singer understands that putting together a show requires careful planning and time.

If she ever decides to hold one, she assured her fans it will receive the attention and promotion it truly deserves.

For now, Nina Roz remains focused on her music.

“Besigye Is Extremely Weak And Lost A Lot Of Weight” Says Winnie Byanyima

Winnie Byanyima, the wife of veteran Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, has expressed deep concern over his deteriorating health, following her visit to his prison cell.

Byanyima described the conditions in which Besigye is being held as appalling, likening his detention to kidnapping rather than detention.

Speaking about her visit, she revealed that Besigye is extremely weak, has lost a significant amount of weight, and is experiencing dizziness after reportedly going without food for five days.

“Besigye is weak, has lost alarming weight, and is dizzy. He hasn’t eaten in five days. This is not just illegal detention; it is kidnapping,” Byanyima stated.

According to her, the cell is in a highly restricted section, requiring her to pass through seven locked gates in a dark and narrow corridor before reaching him.

“The room itself is small, with only a tiny bed, a pile of old newspapers, and two worn-out cardboard boxes. “

She noted that the area is allegedly reserved for suspected terrorists, making Besigye’s confinement all the more distressing.

“It was very painful to find Besigye in such humiliating circumstances,” she lamented.

Byanyima also condemned the recent visit by Minister of Information, Chris Baryomunsi, whom she accused of intruding on Besigye’s privacy.

She clarified that Besigye neither invited nor consented to meeting the minister, adding that he remained silent throughout the visit in protest.

“Besigye made it clear—he neither invited nor consented to seeing Mr. Baryomunsi. A prison officer forced him into the room. Mr. Baryomunsi lied about having a conversation. Besigye remained completely silent in protest,” she stated.

She further criticized Baryomunsi’s public claims that he had spoken with Besigye, calling it a blatant misrepresentation of what actually transpired.

Byanyima has now turned her attention to President Yoweri Museveni and the Chief of Defense Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, demanding Besigye’s immediate release.

“I am outraged and demand that President Kaguta Museveni and his son, the army chief, release him immediately. He is a citizen with rights—just like them!” she asserted.

KCCA Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura Arrested Over ‘Free Kizza Besigye’ Protests

Kampala city deputy lord mayor Doreen Nyanjura has been arrested over ‘Free Kizza Besigye’ protests.

She was arrested alongside political activist Faridah Nangozi and Ingrid Turinawe, head of mobilization in the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF).

The trio was detained near Arua Park in downtown Kampala. Eyewitnesses described the scene as violent, with heavily deployed police officers forcibly arresting the women as they rallied Ugandans to stand up against injustices.

“Police officers bundled them into a patrol vehicle as people started gathering around. They were taken to CPS [Central Police Station],” an eyewitness said.

Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the arrests but said a formal statement would be issued later.

Heavy security deployment in Kampala

The arrests occurred amid a significant security presence in downtown Kampala, aimed at preventing further protests demanding Besigye’s release. Heavily armed security personnel, including the Field Force Unit (FFU), counterterrorism officers, and plainclothes detectives, were deployed at key road junctions.

Security forces also restricted access to the PFF offices at Katonga. Meanwhile, boda-boda riders and pedestrians were being instructed not to stop in areas such as Mulago Roundabout, Lugogo, Makerere Kavule, Bwaise, and parts of the city centre.

Addressing journalists at police headquarters in Naguru, police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said the heightened deployment was based on intelligence suggesting possible unrest in the city.

“Our deployment is based on the need. Today, intelligence indicates that there are individuals planning to cause unrest, so we must deploy accordingly as a countermeasure to address potential threats,” Kituuma said.

Turinawe and Nyanjura had spent the weekend rallying for a nationwide “Free Besigye” protest, urging Ugandans to demand the release of Besigye and other political prisoners.

“Let us raise our voices for the freedom of Dr. Besigye, all political prisoners. Free Uganda. Free All. Start from where you are, use what you have, and do what you can,” they posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Last week, Turinawe and other activists were arrested while protesting the continued detention of Besigye and Abed Lutale at Luzira Prison, despite a Supreme court ruling that deemed military courts in their current form unconstitutional. They were later released on bail under strict conditions, including a warning to refrain from illegal activities to avoid bail revocation.

Singer Jose Chameleone is set to undergo a major pancreatic operation within the next 12 hours after suffering a health scare at home, where he has been under medical supervision.

The renowned artiste is currently in the United States, where he relocated in December to receive better medical treatment.

In December, Chameleone was admitted to Nakasero Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, after experiencing severe abdominal pain.

Medical evaluations revealed that he was suffering from acute pancreatitis, a condition often linked to excessive alcohol consumption. Doctors advised that immediate and specialized treatment was necessary to prevent further complications.

During his stay at Nakasero Hospital, Chameleone’s condition remained a concern.

After 11 days of intensive care, his medical team recommended that he seek advanced treatment abroad to address his deteriorating health effectively.

Responding to this advice, Chameleone was discharged from Nakasero Hospital on December 23, 2024, and promptly made arrangements to travel to the United States for further medical intervention.

The singer’s journey to the U.S. was facilitated by Ugandan socialite and businesswoman Juliet Zawedde, who generously covered the expenses for his treatment and travel.

Chameleone was admitted to Allina Health Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, where he has been receiving specialized care.

His brother and fellow musician, Weasel Manizo, accompanied him to provide support during this challenging period.Despite the geographical distance, Chameleone has remained connected with his fans and the Ugandan music industry.

He emphasised his commitment to returning to the music scene with renewed energy, stating that his time in recovery has been spent reflecting on his career and planning for future projects.

UPRS Bans Cover Bands From Performing Musicians Songs

Cover band singers have expressed their frustrations about Uganda Performing Right Society (UPRS)’s new directive to have them pay for licenses for singing other artists’ songs.

Jonah a member of the popular cover band Yeffe Band revealed how the country’s current economic status has forced them to lean on their talents for survival; they end up doing cover songs due to failure to secure jobs and he feels it is unfair to make them pay without considering the challenges they go through to earn a living through it.

“The problems that come with job hunting and lack of experience in the corporate world have pushed many youths to feed off their talents. What they are doing is right but I believe it would be more proper if they just didn’t push out a directive but get on the ground and know the challenges we face. Unless they bring out the copyright law and are willing to support us all, it is okay,” he said.

Timo who performs Reggae Music under Double Trouble Revolution Band revealed that the new directive left them with no option but to do music from other countries and avoid being charged for covering Ugandan music.

Martin Nkoyoyo, commonly known by his stage name Yoyo who acts as the board chairman revealed that bands that specialize in doing covers will start paying for these licenses which will be charged depending on how many times they perform in a week and will be billed in percentages.

“We looked at the bands with just one gig a month and considered we would not give them the same rate as these ones who perform occasionally. The person who pays the least will be paying Shs. 250K and it is only paid once a year,” Yoyo said.

Yoyo recalled back in the day, bars held celebrity nights where musicians would perform and earn some money. These, however, have been replaced with band nights and it was only right for UPRS to start collecting royalties and give them to the artists behind the songs they do.
