NRM Rolls Out Agricultural Expo Known As ‘Kisoboka’ To Enhance Wealth Creation

0

The ruling NRM rolled out an agricultural expo known as ‘Kisoboka’ (it is possible) to enhance productivity and wealth creation among Ugandans.

The drive, which was launched on Thursday by the party Secretary General, Richard Todwong, at the Kavumba Recreation Centre in Wakiso town council, will begin in all districts in the central region before being expanded into other regions.

The program, a mindset change initiative, is the brainchild of the NRM Vice Chairman for Central Region, Godfrey Kiwanda Suubi.

In his speech to the leaders, Todwong said the campaign will mobilise Ugandans into joining modern agriculture with a focus on coffee to increase production, profitability, and wealth creation.

“This is the gospel we intend to spread throughout the central region among our people. It is consistent with President Museveni’s message of improving people’s livelihoods,” Todwong said.

According to Todwong, they will attract Ugandans, especially youth, into agriculture by showcasing the success and positive stories of individuals that are already doing well in intensive farming.

Kiwanda said the expo is in line with the NRM manifesto and the National Development Plan III of socio-economic transformation among citizens through commercial agriculture. “I am hopeful that farmers will implement the knowledge and guidance that shall be offered through sub-regional barazas.”

He urged Ugandans to also undertake the Parish Development Model and Emyooga government empowerment programmes to access free seedlings and source knowledge from extension workers.

The NRM Deputy Secretary General, Rose Nsereko Namayanja, challenged leaders at all levels to empower their people through various projects for income generation instead of lamentations against the government.

“I implore the leaders to spread the information on good farming practices to people in the villages. This is the only way to improve the lives of Ugandans,” Namayanja said, adding that “our trail must show that we are moving in the right direction.”

Other leaders present at the function include NRM Vice Chairman for Western Uganda Chris Baryomunsi, NRM Chairperson for the Women’s League Lydia Wanyoto, and NRM Youth League National Chairman Nassur Gaddafi among other notable leaders from the central region.

Civil Society Task Stakeholders To Invest in Environment Conservation

0

Civil society members have tasked stakeholders in environment conservation to recommit themselves on action to save the planet amid climate change challenges.

As part of the Climate Justice Week of Action activities, a group of over 100 members from seven civil society organisations today Thursday May 16, 2024 held a solidarity march across Kampala themed, “From words to action, Put your money where your mouth is” to raise awareness about the urgency of climate change and its impact.

Carrying placards with messages calling on leaders to action, members from civil society organisations to include ActionAid International Uganda (AAIU), COTA, MEMPROW, and Vijana Corps among others marched from City Square in Kampala up to Makerere University main campus amidst the morning downpour.

ActionAid International Uganda country director, Mr. Xavier Ejoyi rallied stakeholders to invest in “solutions to climate change, not in its causes like fossil fuels and industrial agriculture which profit a few people”.

He added that “We are running against time, it is urgent, necessary and important that we get climate justice. Communities that are already vulnerable and impoverished are at the receiving end of the climate change impact, so we cannot sit by and watch as lives are being lost.”

About 16 people have since perished in mudslides in Kisika, Rukoki sub-county, Kasese district following floods caused by heavy rains.

With over 13 meters, Lake Victoria is experiencing the highest water levels a concern that recently prompted cabinet to earmark 5.5 billion shillings to construct gabions in selected areas along the Lake to protect infrastructure like roads.

Relatedly, Women have urged government to enhance their access to climate change financing given the crucial role they (women) play in environmental sustainability.

Uganda Police Apprehend Suspect In Viral Nateete Robbery Attempt

0

Police are holding a man who appeared in a viral video attempting to rob money from a local businessman in Nateete, a Kampala City suburb.

The suspect has been identified as Kiiza Ashraf, an employee at Bashir Grain Millers.

ASP Luke Owoyesigire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, said the suspect was arrested on Wednesday evening, May 15, 2024, from Kyotera district, where he fled into hiding.

According to Owoyesigire, the suspect is now being held at Nateete Police Station and will appear in court once his file is sanctioned by the Directorate of Public Prosecution, DPP.

“We have preferred charges of attempted murder against the suspect. We were able to track him through intelligence services, and he is now in our custody,” ASP Owoyesigire said.

According to Owoyesigire, the suspect’s motive was purely to rob money from their client; unfortunately, he didn’t succeed.

Police said Kiiza attacked Sam Turyamuhaki on Monday, May 14, 2024, at around 8 p.m. when he walked into the cash office with a machete and hammer.

In the video, Kiiza is seen placing the sack on the waiting chairs as Turyamuhaki counts money, seemingly unbothered.

However, Kiiza picks up a machete from the sack and orders Turyamuhaki to surrender the money he was counting. Instead, Turyamuhaki attempts to grab the attacker’s machete but misses it in the process.

Kiiza then descended on Turyamuhaki and hacked him on the head, attracting the intervention of other people who temporarily subdued him, but he eventually escaped.

Speaker Among Urges Legislators To Encourage Constituents To Participate In Population Census

0

The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has urged legislators to encourage constituents to participate in the ongoing National Housing and Population Census to provide crucial data for better government planning.

She made the appeal during her opening remarks while chairing the plenary session on Thursday, May 16, 2024, in Parliament.

Among said the exercise is critical to providing information on the current number of people living in Uganda and the nature of their households so as to enable the government to plan for them better.

“Talk to your electorates; encourage them to be registered because, at the end of the day, it is out of that registration that we shall know the population we have as a country; we will be able to plan for our people as a country based on the number that we know, and we will know the nature of the households,” Speaker Among remarked.

On Wednesday, May 15, 2024, a court in Luwero remanded a local pastor, Navas Vella, the self-proclaimed Jesus, to Buntuntumula prison for refusing to be counted during the ongoing National Population and Housing Census 2024.

He was charged with obstructing the execution of lawful duty contrary to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) Act, Sec. 28(3).

Early this week, the government extended the census exercise in the three districts of Kampala, Wakiso, and Mukono by one more day.

The Executive Director of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, Dr. Chris Mukiza, said they needed more time to compensate for lost time since there was less activity on the first day of the counting.

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics kicked off the 2024 National Population and Housing Census on May 9, 2024, and is expected to end on May 19, 2024, under the theme It Matters to Be Counted.

Uganda Investment Authority Launches Domestic Investment Division To Boost Local Investments

0

The Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) launched its Domestic Investment Division (DID), a special-purpose vehicle for promoting and deepening domestic investments in Uganda.

UIA, which has been perfecting the DID for the last few years, launched the division at a ceremony presided over by the State Minister of Finance (Privatisation and Investment), Evelyn Anite.

The objectives of the Domestic Investment Division include promoting an enabling environment for domestic investors (SMEs) by encouraging collaboration with investment and business support agencies.

Launching the division, Minister Anite said UIA through the DID will contribute significantly to Uganda’s $500 billion by the end of National Development Plan IV starting in 2026.

Minister Anite said Ugandans, and especially domestic investors, are central to Uganda’s industrialization and economic growth and development, hence the significance of the DID, adding that “it’s the role of UIA to support that process by creating an enabling environment”.

The Minister encouraged domestic investors to access affordable financing offered by the Government of Uganda, as well as development partners, like through the Uganda Development Bank, Bank of Uganda (Agricultural Credit Facility and Small Business Recovery Fund), and the Parish Development Model.

Others are Investment for Industrial Transformation and Employment (INVITE) and Generating Growth Opportunities and Productivity for Women Enterprises (GROW) projects, both funded by the World Bank through the Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU) and Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, respectively.

The Chairman of the Board of UIA, Morrison Rwakakamba, said Uganda’s upcoming National Development Plan IV, which targets an economic growth rate of 10% and a GDP of $500 billion will be driven by Ugandans mainly through domestic investments.

Rwakakamba said: “We’re seeing an interesting trend in Uganda’s business sector growth. Ugandan billionaires are transitioning from trading to real estate to big-time industrialists. In Namanve Industrial Park you get big factories like Mariana, Ntake, Luuka and Bella all started by one-time traders.”

Rwakakamba said UIA is taking a long focus on domestic investments because that is what Uganda’s economic growth and development will depend on sustainably.

The Director General of UIA, Robert Mukiza, said the Domestic Investment Division will not only serve domestic investors but also ensure they graduate into successful investors capable of adding value to raw materials, creating jobs and contributing to the economic development of Uganda.

Mukiza encouraged domestic investors to make the most use of the UIA One-Stop Centre for Investors, stressing that the Centre, with its 15-plus investment and business agencies, is there to simplify the work of investors.

Mukiza said: “UIA, as a One-Stop Centre, is there to do the running around for you as you focus on investing, adding value to our raw materials, creating products and jobs and contributing to Uganda’s economic growth and development”.

The acting Director of the Domestic Investment Division, Richard Nuwenyesiga, said the division is creating a pool of profiled domestic investors in various sectors who can be matched with international investors, financiers, capacity builders and other investment and business support services.

He added that a key objective of the Uganda Investment Authority is to increase the value of domestic investment from 24.4% to 50% by the end of 2025 by supporting initiatives like business linkages, import substitution, promoting export-oriented industries, and improving SME competitiveness, amongst others.

Six Children Die In Wakiso House Fire

0

Six children aged between 2 and 16 years have perished in a fire at Mulanda B, Kisubi parish, Kajjansi town council, in Wakiso district.

The fire whose cause isn’t yet established razed the house of Bakita Ayang, a South Sudanese national on Wednesday morning. Locals alerted Kisubi police station which took about two hours mobilize the fire brigade and by the time the fire was contained, the lives of six children had already been lost.

Only two adult women were rescued and are currently receiving treatment at Kisubi hospital. Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, said locals tried their best to save the children’s lives but in vain because the fire swiftly engulfed the whole house giving neighbours no chance to save the victims.

“A tragic fire outbreak occurred in Mulanda B, Kisubi, resulting in the loss of six young lives,” Owoyesigyire explained. “It was approximately 1 am in Mulanda B, Kisubi when police received a distress call from a community member. The fire had engulfed the residence of Bakita Ayang, where six children were trapped. Despite efforts by community members to rescue them, the children, aged between 2 and 16, succumbed to the fire.”

According to Owoyesigyire, the six bodies burnt beyond recognition were retrieved and taken to Mulago mortuary for postmortem. This was after the firefighters dispatched by Entebbe police division eventually extinguished the fire.

“Initial observations suggest that the fire originated from an electronic kettle left unattended in the sitting room, connected to a socket,” Owoyesigyire said. “Further inquiries will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the fire.”

Police have secured the scene and more information is being gathered to make a conclusion on the incident that has left devastating memories in the area. Police have urged the public to exercise caution and vigilance to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Every year Kampala metropolitan registers at least one tragic fire incident that kills whole family members. In the last five years, it has happened in Kasanga, Bukasa, Ndeeba, Nakulabye, Kasangati, Katwe, Makindye and Luzira. These incidents are home based, even as the country gets hit by school fires which claim lives of children in dormitories.
