The gadget was stolen on the first day of enumeration exercise.

Anglican Church Calls For Increased Support For Martyrs’ Day Celebrations

0

As the annual Martyrs’ Day celebrations draw close, the Anglican Church is calling for more support towards preparations for the June 3rd event.

Speaking to KFM, the Chairman Organizing  Ruwenzori Cluster Bishop Reuben Kisembo says not even 50% of the proposed Shs2.1bn budget has been raised so far.

Bishop Kisembo says even the government pledge of Shs.1.5bn is yet to materialise, calling on the faithful to support the diocese with this year’s Martyrs Day preparations.

He adds that if the budgeted funds are raised in good time, they may be forced to cut off some important activities.

” For now we appeal to the general public to continue to raise and giving us  the money  to support the function.” Kisembo said.

The mid-west Ruwenzori Cluster will lead the 2024 Uganda Martyr’s Day Celebrations at the Martyr’s Shrine Namugongo on June 3rd.

Countdown Begins: Uganda Film Festival Announces 2024 Nominees

0

On June 7, the Uganda Communication Commission suppoorted Uganda Film Festival (UFF) will hold their annual cinema celebration.

As it is a norm, awards are handed out to outstanding films in both technical and acting fields. This year, about 307 films were submitted, though less than a quarter of these walked away with nominations.

About 50 films are spread across the 25 categories, and unlike in past years, when many filmmakers prioritised making films in English, a good number of films in the mix this year are in indigenous languages.

Three films, Eleanor Nabwiso’s Christmas Together, Nisha Kalema’s Makula, and Ibrahim Hammis Mayanja’s Omukululo, dominate most of the categories, such as acting, screenplay, and technical ones.

Makula leads the nominations with 12 of them, including Best Actress for Kalema; the film follows an extensive yet secret ring of human and organ traffickers, while Omukululo, with ten nominations, is about everything that could go wrong when the truth is kept under the rug.

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) says it has strengthened security of the 2024 National Housing and Population Census (NHPC) enumerators following cases of attacks in two separate incidents.

This is after one of the enumerators identified as Andrew Ssali was attacked and killed by unknown people in Najeera, a Kampala suburb on Saturday night.

Another one identified as James Kalyango was stabbed by unknown assailants on Friday morning as he made village rounds to mobilise residents for the census exercise using a megaphone speaker.

According to Dr Chris Mukiza, the Bureau’s Executive Director, they are working with Local Government officials, Resident District Commissioners and District Police Commanders to beef up security of enumerators.

Dr Mukiza adds that specifically for Apaa where there are land disputes, the Bureau has written to the Chief of Defence Forces requesting for support to which he has responded positively.

He reveals that so far, 5.7m people have so far been enumerated from 1.6m households across the country.

The 2024 census exercise that kicked off on May 10 shall be concluded on May 19 except for the three districts of Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono where a one-day extension was announced due to glitches at the start.

The 2024 National Census is the first to have digital technology used to collect, process, and disseminate census results.

SHALLIPOPI

How would you describe your musical style and what are some of the influences that have shaped your sound?

My music is experimental music or what I call Afro-talk. It’s just my own type of sound.

How does it feel to be one of this year’s Spotify RADAR artists?

It feels great. It’s an opportunity for more people to meet me at the front. This is just the beginning.

Artists often face unique challenges. What has surprised you most about the music industry so far?  What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned on your musical journey?

Nothing surprises me about the music game – I’m enjoying it. The big lesson is not to give up. Just do what you’re doing and listen to the people close to you.

Looking ahead, what are you most excited about in your musical journey?

I’m excited about everything because this is my dream. Doing music back to back, I’ve been doing music since I was a child so everything about it is exciting.

MANANA

How would you describe your musical style and what are some of the influences that have shaped your sound?

I would say I make alternative RnB, with a singer-songwriter twist. My influences are a combination of training from my upbringing, harmonies from choir school, chord progressions from jazz studies and then the rest is from hearing RnB and neo-soul music from my brother’s CD collection

How does it feel to be one of this year’s Spotify RADAR artists?

Feels good. It’s a privilege, I’m very grateful. It is reassuring and encouraging to see that the work we’re putting in is appreciated.

Artists often face unique challenges. What has surprised you most about the music industry so far?  What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned on your musical journey?

I don’t think I’ve had any surprises. But I think the struggle I had to deal with is comparison. I think social media has given us access to parts of the world that previously weren’t easily accessible, but has also exposed us to this feeling of inadequacy that maybe isn’t warranted. I think focusing on what I’m doing and not trying to make music that would be viral or “challenge friendly” has been my biggest lesson.

Looking ahead, what are you most excited about in your musical journey?

Growth. Every year I start with that being my goal. I’m not sure what that looks like exactly but I know consistent growth has no limit. So that’s the hope for the future.

JOSHUA BARAKA

How would you describe your musical style and what are some of the influences that have shaped your sound?

I’d describe my musical style as an interpretation of what I feel at the time I’m making that particular piece of music. Basically, my music is who I am so I’d describe my music as another version of me. I’ve been influenced by a lot of gospel musicians because I grew up in a staunch Christian family. As I grew up and got access to more genres of music, I became obsessed with Bob Marley, Chronixx, jazz music in general and every RnB artist I could find.

I’ve also been influenced by Ugandan artists like Radio from the duo Radio and Weasel, Maurice Kirya and Elly Wamala.

How does it feel to be one of this year’s Spotify RADAR artists?

It feels really good to be chosen to be a part of this year’s RADAR artists. I feel like a part of something bigger than myself. It’s a step in the right direction and vision which is to shine light on Uganda and East Africa in general.

Artists often face unique challenges. What has surprised you most about the music industry so far?  What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned on your musical journey?

What surprised me the most about the music industry is how different it is from whatever you see on Tv and the internet. It’s not as smooth and easy as it’s made to appear. My biggest lesson so far is that you need to show up regardless of how you feel and do what you need to do.That is the price for growth.

Looking ahead, what are you most excited about in your musical journey?

I’m excited for the day Uganda is recognized on the music scene globally because we have a lot of talents, tujja tujja. For myself, I’m excited to share all the new music I have been working on and some serious work coming up. I’m excited for where all this journey is headed

Check out Shallipoppi’s ASAP and Cast, Manana’s Hold me Tight and Sunday Morning,  as well as Joshua Baraka’s Dalilah and Nana Remix on RADAR Africa.  Assets to go along with your story are attached.  Let me know if you have any questions or are interested in covering!

Government Urges Media To Fully Support And Publicize 2024 National Population Census Exercise

0

With just hours to Census night, the government is appealing to the media to fully support and publicize the 2024 National Housing and Population Census exercise.

This is after the National Association of Broadcasters turned down the directive by the Uganda Communications Commission for broadcasters to air President Museveni’s census message.

According to the association chairman Innocent Nahabwe, media houses operate as commercial entities, paying licensing fees to UCC, and taxes and face financial obligations such as staff salaries and operational expenses.

In a statement issued yesterday, Nahabwe said there should be deliberate budgeting for national activities like the census.

However, addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Center in Kampala on Thursday, ICT and National Guidance Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi has said that this is not possible due budgetary constraints, thus appealing to the broadcasters to heed to the regulator’s call,” it is not that  UBOS had the money and the have diverted it and the don’t want to pay the media houses as far  as i am concerned   i don’t think was a provision for  paying  media house for that message but my appeal would be for the interest of the cooperation we have always with them to air that message,” Baryomunsi said.

This comes as final preparations are being made by the Uganda National Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) for the 2024 National Housing and Population Census that is set to kick off tomorrow, which the government has gazetted as a public holiday.
