President Museveni to Launch “Lake Victoria Logistics” (MAHATHI)

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is set to officially launch “Lake Victoria Logistics” (MAHATHI) on July 18, 2024, in Kawuku, along the shores of Lake Victoria. This initiative, aimed at enhancing fuel transportation to Uganda, marks a significant step in the country’s efforts to streamline its petroleum supply chain. The project involves the transportation of fuel supplies to Uganda via Lake Victoria, primarily from Kisumu, Kenya, using two newly introduced fuel vessels.

The Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) has been at the forefront of implementing the sole importation of petroleum mandate. This strategic move is designed to ensure a stable and reliable supply of petroleum products, addressing the challenges previously faced in the country’s fuel sector. The mandate is part of a broader effort to bolster Uganda’s energy security, reduce dependency on external suppliers, and manage the fluctuations in global oil prices.

Uganda has historically relied on road and rail transport for fuel imports, which often resulted in logistical bottlenecks, increased transportation costs, and susceptibility to disruptions. The traditional routes from the coastal ports of Mombasa and Dar es Salaam have posed challenges such as road congestion, accidents, and delays, impacting the timely delivery of fuel to the country. Additionally, fluctuating global oil prices and geopolitical factors have further complicated the fuel supply chain.

The introduction of Lake Victoria Logistics represents a paradigm shift in Uganda’s approach to fuel transportation. By utilizing Lake Victoria as a transport route, Uganda aims to significantly reduce the risks and inefficiencies associated with road and rail transport. The two fuel vessels, specifically designed for this purpose, will ensure a steady and reliable flow of petroleum products from Kisumu to Uganda.

This initiative is expected to enhance the capacity of Uganda’s fuel supply chain, providing a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional transport methods. The strategic location of Kawuku as the project’s launch site underscores the importance of Lake Victoria in regional trade and transport.

UNOC’s mandate for the sole importation of petroleum involves a comprehensive strategy encompassing procurement, transportation, storage, and distribution of fuel. The company has invested in state-of-the-art infrastructure, including fuel storage facilities and modern transport vessels, to support this initiative. By centralizing the importation process, UNOC aims to achieve greater control over the supply chain, ensuring transparency, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

The successful implementation of the sole importation mandate by UNOC is poised to have far-reaching impacts on Uganda’s energy sector. Key benefits include:

  1. Enhanced Energy Security: By controlling the importation and distribution of petroleum products, Uganda can better manage its energy resources and mitigate the impact of global supply disruptions.
  2. Cost Reduction: The use of lake transport is expected to lower transportation costs, translating to more competitive fuel prices for consumers.
  3. Environmental Benefits: Reducing reliance on road transport will decrease the carbon footprint associated with fuel transportation, contributing to Uganda’s environmental sustainability goals.
  4. Economic Growth: A stable and reliable fuel supply is critical for economic activities, including industry, transportation, and agriculture. Improved fuel logistics will support Uganda’s overall economic development.

The launch of Lake Victoria Logistics is just one component of UNOC’s broader vision for Uganda’s energy sector. The company is also exploring opportunities for local refining, enhanced storage capacity, and regional partnerships to further strengthen its position in the East African energy market.

As President Museveni inaugurates this landmark project, it symbolizes a new era in Uganda’s quest for energy security and economic prosperity. The collaborative efforts of UNOC, the government, and regional stakeholders will be pivotal in realizing the full potential of this initiative, paving the way for a more resilient and sustainable fuel supply chain for Uganda.
