The Uganda Police Force (UPF) has made significant advancements in its canine capabilities, transitioning from reliance on imported canines to developing a robust in-house breeding program.
This milestone was highlighted yesterday during an inspection at the Naggalama breeding center, conducted by the Director of Operations for the Uganda Police Force, Senior Commissioner of Police (SCP) Frank Mwesigwa.
The inspection was led by Commissioner of Police Dr. Martin Mugume, who oversees the canine unit’s operations.
SCP Mwesigwa expressed his admiration for the progress made by the unit, noting the substantial increase in canine numbers and the enhanced operational capacity that this development brings.
“We are witnessing a remarkable transformation in our canine unit. The shift from importing canines to establishing our own breeding program is a testament to the Uganda Police Force’s commitment to self-reliance and sustainability,” said Mwesigwa.
“This initiative has allowed us to increase our canine numbers tenfold, enabling us to effectively serve various districts across the country.”
The in-house breeding program has not only boosted the number of canines but also ensured that the dogs are better adapted to the local environment and conditions.
This local breeding initiative is critical in maintaining a well-trained, responsive canine unit capable of addressing the unique security challenges faced in Uganda.
Commissioner of Police Dr. Martin Mugume highlighted the importance of this program, stating, “Our goal is to continue expanding and improving our canine capabilities, ensuring that our police force is well-equipped to handle any situation.
“The Uganda Police Force’s canine unit plays a vital role in various operations, including crime detection, search and rescue, and public order management. With the enhanced breeding program, the unit is now better positioned to support these efforts nationwide” he stated.
This development is a significant leap forward in the UPF’s mission to provide effective and efficient policing services, enhancing security and safety for all Ugandans.
As the program continues to grow, the Uganda Police Force is set to become a model of self-sufficiency and operational excellence in the region.
